Understanding the impact of PCOS on urinary frequency

Imagine experiencing the involuntary leakage of urine, ranging from occasional to frequent incidents. This is what we refer to as urinary incontinence. Although not directly caused by PCOS itself, several factors associated with the condition can influence the development of urinary incontinence in affected women.

1.Hormonal Imbalances: PCOS hormonal imbalances can have an impact on the muscles and tissues in the pelvic area, potentially weakening the pelvic floor muscles responsible for urinary control.

2. Obesity: It's no secret that PCOS and obesity often go hand in hand. Excess weight exerts additional pressure on the pelvic floor muscles, gradually weakening them. This can increase the likelihood of urinary incontinence.

3. Insulin Resistance: Insulin resistance is a characteristic feature of PCOS. This condition can affect bladder function by disrupting the normal mechanisms that regulate it. The elevated insulin levels associated with insulin resistance may lead to increased urine production and urgency, which in turn can contribute to urinary incontinence.

4. Previous Abdominal Surgeries: If you have undergone abdominal surgery for your condition, such as a hysterectomy? It's important to note that these surgeries can weaken your pelvic floor muscles, compromising their ability to support the bladder effectively leads to urinary incontinence.

Managing urinary frequency in women with PCOS

Managing urinary incontinence through Ayurveda, yoga, and simple exercises can provide holistic and long-term support.

Ayurveda and Yoga: Ayurvedic herbs like Gokshura, Triphala etc are effectively used for managing these symptoms. Along with the medications, Snehana (oleation), Swedana (sudation) and different types of Basti (enema). Several yoga asanas can help strengthen the pelvic floor and support urinary system health. These may include gomukhasana (cow’s  pose), pavanamuktasana (wind-relieving pose), ardha matsyendrasana (half spinal twist pose), uttanapadasana (raised leg pose), viparita karani (legs up the wall pose), mula bandha (root lock).

Kegel Exercises: Kegel exercises target the pelvic floor muscles directly. Simply contract and hold the muscles that control urination for a few seconds, then release. Repeat this cycle several times throughout the day to strengthen the pelvic floor.

Maintaining a Healthy Weight: If excess weight contributes to urinary incontinence, Ayurveda suggests maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise. This can relieve pressure on the pelvic floor muscles.

Stress Reduction: Chronic stress can exacerbate urinary incontinence. Practice stress management techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and regular self-care to promote relaxation and hormonal balance.
