PCOS and Period Pain: Causes and Solutions

According to Ayurveda, period pain is primarily caused by an imbalance in the Vata dosha, which governs movement and circulation in the body. When Vata becomes imbalanced, it can lead to menstrual cramps, bloating, and other discomforts.

To alleviate period pain and restore balance, Ayurveda suggests the following remedies:

Herbal Teas: Sip on Ayurvedic herbal teas known for their soothing and calming properties. Chamomile, fennel, and ginger teas can help ease menstrual cramps and promote relaxation.

Ayurvedic Herbs: Incorporate Ayurvedic herbs known for their menstrual health benefits. Ashoka, Abhaya, Shatavari, and Dashamoola are commonly used to regulate hormonal balance, reduce inflammation, and ease period pain.

Dietary Adjustments: Make dietary modifications to support hormonal balance and reduce inflammation. Include warming spices like ginger, cinnamon, and turmeric in your meals. Avoid cold, heavy, and processed foods during your menstrual cycle.

Yoga and Meditation: Engage in gentle yoga poses and practice meditation to calm the mind and relax the body. Balasana (Child's Pose), Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose), and Savasana (Corpse Pose) can be beneficial for relieving period pain

Rest and Relaxation: During menstruation, it's essential to prioritize rest and relaxation. Allow yourself ample time for sleep, as proper rest aids in hormonal balance and rejuvenation. Avoid excessive physical exertion and engage in gentle activities like light walks or yoga.

Gentle Abdominal Massage: Practice self-massage on the abdomen using warm Ayurvedic oils. Gently massage in a clockwise direction to promote relaxation, improve circulation, and alleviate menstrual cramps. This soothing practice can help release tension and support a healthy flow.

Emotional Well-being: Pay attention to your emotional well-being during menstruation. Engage in activities that promote relaxation, such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or gentle yoga. Create a calm and peaceful environment that allows you to unwind and connect with yourself.

Maintain Hygiene: Proper hygiene during menstruation is crucial. Use organic cotton pads or menstrual cups to minimize exposure to chemicals and promote comfort. Change pads or cups regularly to maintain cleanliness and prevent infections.

Avoid Sexual Activity: Ayurveda recommends avoiding sexual activity during menstruation to allow the body to naturally cleanse and rejuvenate. It's believed that engaging in sexual intercourse during this time may disrupt the body's natural rhythm, Vata imbalance and energy flow.
